Kenya expects six oil tankers among 51 vessels scheduled to call at the ports of Mombasa and Lamu over a 14-day period. The shipments include butane, gasoil, base oil, palm oil and V Power, as the country faces concerns over international fuel deliveries following reported drone attacks on two Kenya-bound tankers and a recent increase in pump prices.

Key Overview

  • Kenya expects 51 vessel calls at Mombasa and Lamu over 14 days.
  • Mombasa is scheduled to receive 41 vessels, including six oil tankers.
  • Lamu is expected to handle 10 vessels.
  • Tanker cargoes include butane, gasoil, base oil, palm oil and V Power.
  • Higher international petroleum costs and shipping security concerns are putting pressure on Kenya’s fuel supply outlook.

Six Tankers Form Part of Kenya’s Incoming Shipments

Kenya is expecting six oil tankers among 51 vessels scheduled to call at the ports of Mombasa and Lamu over a 14-day period. The expected arrivals form part of a shipping schedule issued by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on October 19, outlining vessel movements through the end of the month.

The schedule includes tankers carrying butane, V Power, palm oil, base oil and gasoil. These products serve different purposes, from fuel for cooking and transport to industrial and automotive applications.

Mombasa is expected to receive 41 vessels, comprising six oil tankers, 26 container ships, seven conventional cargo vessels and two car carriers. Lamu is projected to handle the remaining 10 vessels, including nine container ships and one general cargo vessel.

The figures highlight Mombasa’s central role in handling petroleum-related imports, while both ports continue to support Kenya’s wider cargo supply chains.

What the Tankers Are Carrying

Infographic showing scheduled tanker cargoes arriving in Kenya, including butane, V Power, base oil, gasoil and palm oil, with vessels such as Atlantic Victory, Bellatrix, Bow Lynx, Torm Sublime and Jupiter.

The planned shipments include several energy-related products. A vessel carrying butane was scheduled for October 19, followed by a tanker carrying V Power on October 20. Two other vessels carrying base oil and gasoil were listed for October 21, while a palm oil shipment was expected later in the period.

The Atlantic Victory and Torm Sublime are among the vessels listed, carrying butane and gasoil respectively. The Bellatrix is associated with a V Power cargo, while the Jupiter and Bow Lynx are listed for palm oil and base oil shipments.

These are scheduled arrivals rather than confirmation that every vessel has docked or discharged its cargo. The distinction matters because shipping delays can affect when imported products become available to downstream suppliers.

Fuel Supply Concerns Follow Reported Tanker Attacks

The incoming shipments come amid concerns about the security of international petroleum transport. Two tankers destined for Kenya were reportedly hit by drones while travelling through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The vessels sustained engine damage, while the petroleum products aboard were reported to remain safe.

The incidents have drawn attention to the risks facing fuel shipments moving through a key global energy route. Prolonged disruption could delay deliveries or raise transportation and insurance costs, potentially adding to pressure on import-dependent markets.

The six oil tankers expected at Mombasa are part of the wider supply picture, but the available schedule does not establish whether they are replacing the affected shipments or carrying the same consignments.

Rising Pump Prices Add Pressure

Kenya’s shipping concerns coincide with higher retail fuel prices. For the October 15 to November 14 pricing period, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority increased Nairobi’s maximum super petrol price by KSh12.93 per litre to KSh226.96. Diesel rose by KSh9.90 to KSh227.76 per litre, while kerosene increased by KSh28.49 to KSh219.87 per litre.

The increases followed a rise in the landed cost of imported petroleum products. Higher fuel prices can raise transport and distribution expenses, affecting households, public transport operators and businesses that depend on road freight.

The latest vessel projections show that 51 ships are expected across the two ports, up from the 45 vessels forecast in an earlier October schedule. However, the additional vessel calls do not by themselves guarantee lower pump prices, which also depend on international prices, import costs, exchange rates and domestic pricing arrangements.

Outlook

The arrival schedule provides a snapshot of Kenya’s efforts to maintain the flow of imported energy products amid international shipping uncertainty. The six tankers could contribute to the movement of essential petroleum-related cargoes, but their actual impact will depend on arrival times, cargo volumes and the timely distribution of products after docking.

For consumers and businesses, the key factors to watch are whether shipments arrive as scheduled, whether global shipping disruptions ease and how international petroleum costs evolve. More vessels are expected at Kenya’s ports, but this alone does not guarantee an immediate reduction in fuel prices.

FAQs

1. How many oil tankers are expected at Kenyan ports?
