Turkey Unveils ‘Electricity TANAP’ to Supply Europe

Turkey unveils Electricity TANAP project to supply power and strengthen Europe’s energy security
Share

Turkey is advancing plans for a major cross-border electricity corridor linking Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, and potentially Central Asia to Europe.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar described the initiative as the “electricity version of TANAP,” referencing the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline that carries Azerbaijani gas to Europe through Turkey.

The project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen regional energy security, expand renewable electricity trade, and improve grid interconnections across southeast Europe and the Caucasus.

Key Overview

  • Turkey plans a major regional electricity corridor
  • The project links Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and Bulgaria
  • Officials describe it as the “electricity version of TANAP”
  • The corridor could eventually extend into Central Asia
  • Turkey plans a $30 billion grid modernization program
  • The initiative aims to strengthen regional energy security
  • The project could compete with a Black Sea HVDC cable proposal

Turkey Expands Energy Partnership Beyond Gas

Turkey is planning a major electricity interconnection project designed to transport green electricity from Azerbaijan and neighboring regions to Europe through Turkish infrastructure.

Speaking during Baku Energy Week, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said energy security in today’s increasingly volatile global environment requires stronger diversification and connectivity strategies.

As part of that approach, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and Bulgaria are advancing plans for a Green Electricity Transmission and Trade project aimed at improving regional electricity integration.

Bayraktar described the initiative as the “electricity version of TANAP,” referencing the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline that currently transports Azerbaijani natural gas to Turkey and European markets.

“We are going to create the electricity version of TANAP,” Bayraktar said.

Unlike TANAP, which focuses on gas transportation, the proposed project would focus on moving electricity generated across the Caucasus and surrounding regions into Turkey and onward into Europe.

“You will be hearing much more in the coming weeks and months about the project to carry the electricity resources to Türkiye and, through Türkiye, to Europe,” Bayraktar added.

Green Electricity Corridor Planned

The initiative aims to establish a cross-border electricity corridor capable of supporting regional electricity trade and facilitating movement of surplus renewable energy between participating countries.

Officials said the project could eventually extend into Central Asia, further expanding electricity interconnections and strengthening regional energy cooperation.

Turkey and Azerbaijan have already built extensive energy infrastructure ties through projects such as TANAP, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan(BTC) oil pipeline, and the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum natural gas pipeline.

These projects have helped position Turkey as a major regional energy transit hub connecting Asia and Europe.

The proposed electricity corridor would expand that role into power transmission and renewable electricity trading.

Analysts say the project reflects growing regional efforts to strengthen energy security while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and improving grid flexibility.

Turkey Plans $30 Billion Grid Upgrade

To support the planned electricity corridor and rising domestic energy production, Turkey also announced plans for a $30 billion modernization of its electricity transmission and distribution system over the next decade.

Bayraktar said the upgrades are intended to accommodate increasing renewable energy generation as well as future nuclear energy output.

The modernization program will also strengthen Turkey’s electricity interconnections with Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Bulgaria, making cross-border electricity trading easier and more efficient.

Analysts say stronger interconnection capacity is becoming increasingly important as countries expand renewable energy systems that require greater grid flexibility and balancing capabilities.

Turkey has been rapidly increasing renewable energy generation capacity while also pursuing nuclear power development to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on imported fuels.

Competing Regional Electricity Projects Emerge

The proposed Turkish-backed electricity corridor appears to compete with another regional energy project involving Romania, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Hungary.

That alternative initiative plans to establish a high-voltage direct current cable beneath the Black Sea to transport electricity into Europe.

Regional governments across southeast Europe and the Caucasus are increasingly seeking closer electricity integration as Europe pushes to diversify energy supplies following recent geopolitical and energy market disruptions.

Analysts say competing electricity corridor proposals highlight the growing strategic importance of cross-border power infrastructure as renewable energy deployment accelerates globally.

Erdogan Highlights Strategic Importance

In a message delivered during Baku Energy Week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized the strategic importance of electricity cooperation between Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Erdoğan said the proposed Green Electricity Transmission and Trade project involving Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Bulgaria is expected to strengthen regional energy security.

Bayraktar described Turkey and Azerbaijan’s energy partnership as “exemplary,” pointing to decades of successful cooperation on oil and gas infrastructure projects.

Together, the two countries continue playing a significant role in supplying energy to both regional and European markets.

Outlook

Turkey’s proposed “electricity TANAP” project signals a major expansion of regional energy cooperation beyond traditional oil and gas infrastructure.

The planned electricity corridor could strengthen renewable energy trade, improve regional energy security, and reinforce Turkey’s role as a critical energy transit hub connecting Asia and Europe.

As governments across southeast Europe and the Caucasus push for stronger electricity integration and cleaner energy systems, projects like this are expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping future regional energy networks.
