Kirkbi Climate, the climate investment unit of the billionaire family behind Lego, plans to double its $1.6 billion climate portfolio over the next five years, with plastics recycling identified as an area for heavy investment. The strategy comes as the European Union prepares to require all packaging to be recyclable by 2030.

Key Overview

  • Kirkbi Climate manages around $1.6 billion across climate investments.
  • The portfolio is planned to double over the next five years.
  • Plastics recycling will be an area where Kirkbi plans to invest heavily.
  • Future investments will be roughly split between energy and recycling.
  • The EU requires all packaging to be recyclable by 2030.
  • Kirkbi is moving toward larger stakes that provide “real influence” at board level.
  • Recycling remains challenged by fragmented value chains and the lower cost of virgin plastic.

Kirkbi Plans Major Investment in Plastics Recycling

Kirkbi A/S, the holding company of the billionaire Danish family behind Lego, plans to significantly increase its investments in climate technologies, with plastics recycling expected to receive substantial funding.

The climate unit of Kirkbi, Kirkbi Climate, intends to double its current $1.6 billion portfolio over the coming five years.

Anupam Bhargava, chief executive officer of Kirkbi Climate, said plastics recycling will be “an area where we plan to invest heavily.”

Kirkbi Climate manages around 10 billion Danish kroner ($1.6 billion) across investments in the energy transition, land use and recycling. Future investments are expected to be roughly split between energy and recycling, with a particular focus on plastics and a handful of European Union countries.

The planned expansion comes as the EU prepares to enforce stricter rules on packaging recyclability.

EU Recycling Rules Create Investment Opportunity

The European Union has set a 2030 deadline for all packaging to be recyclable under its Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

The regulation forms part of broader measures designed to reduce carbon emissions and waste across the EU.

According to Bhargava, the new rules could give investors greater confidence that the recycling market will eventually become commercially viable.

The investment opportunity comes despite current challenges in the economics of recycling. EU estimates indicate that around 77 pounds of plastic-packaging waste is generated per person each year, much of it made from imported fossil fuels.

Recycling has historically faced low investment and competition from petrochemical prices, which have often made virgin plastic cheaper than recycled material.

Bhargava said the industry currently lacks a solution where investing in a technology company alone can produce strong results because recycling operates within a “highly fragmented and not very efficient” value chain.

With the EU’s packaging deadlines approaching, however, he said the industry “needs to get ready now.”

Kirkbi Adopts More Active Investment Strategy

Kirkbi Climate is also changing how it approaches climate investments.

After more than a decade of investing in climate-related opportunities, the fund is moving toward a more active strategy. It plans to seek positions in companies large enough to give it “real influence” on their boards.

The shift follows last year’s decision to establish climate investments as a separate unit.

Bhargava said the family wants Kirkbi to become a business builder if it is going to help address climate challenges at scale.

The approach means taking larger and more active investment positions rather than relying on passive holdings.

Future investments will remain focused on energy transition, land use and recycling, with plastics recycling expected to be a major area of activity.

Lego’s Plastic Recycling Challenge

Kirkbi’s investment strategy also comes as its family-owned toy company has faced challenges in finding lower-carbon alternatives to virgin plastic.

In 2023, Lego abandoned an attempt to manufacture its bricks using recycled PET bottles after determining that the process would have increased carbon emissions rather than reduced them.

The company’s bricks therefore remain made from virgin plastic.

Kirkbi is now investing in technologies and businesses that could contribute to addressing the broader challenges surrounding plastic recycling.

Kirkbi holds the family’s controlling stake in Lego alongside its investment portfolio and serves as the vehicle through which the Kirk Kristiansen family deploys capital elsewhere.

Recycling Technology Faces Scale Challenge

The planned investment comes at a time when the recycling industry is under pressure to develop technologies capable of meeting future packaging requirements.

The EU’s 2030 deadline is expected to create demand for additional recycling capacity and technologies that do not yet exist at scale.

For Kirkbi Climate, the regulatory changes could provide greater visibility into the future market for recycling technologies.

However, economics remains difficult. Virgin plastic can remain cheaper than recycled material, while the recycling value chain remains fragmented and inefficient.

Kirkbi’s strategy is therefore not simply to invest in individual technologies but to take a more active role in businesses that could help build the recycling industry.

Outlook

Kirkbi Climate plans to double its $1.6 billion climate portfolio over the next five years, with investments roughly divided between energy and recycling and a significant focus on plastics recycling.

The strategy comes as the EU’s 2030 recyclable packaging deadline approaches and creates pressure for the recycling industry to develop new capacity and technologies. Kirkbi’s shift toward larger, more influential positions in companies could allow it to take a more active role in building businesses and addressing the fragmented recycling value chain.
