Kenya is positioning the 2026 AmCham Business Summit as a major platform for converting stronger US–East Africa commercial ties into investment commitments and new business deals. The two-day summit scheduled for September 9–10 in Nairobi will bring together government leaders, investors and corporate executives, with President William Ruto serving as chief guest.

The meeting comes as Kenya seeks capital for manufacturing, infrastructure and technology while exporters closely watch the future of preferential access to the US market.

Key Overview

  • The 2026 AmCham Business Summit will take place in Nairobi on September 9–10, 2026.
  • President William Ruto is expected to serve as chief guest.
  • Previous editions have generated more than $2 billion in tracked investment commitments.
  • Seven priority sectors will be targeted, including manufacturing, digital economy, agriculture and infrastructure.
  • Kenya’s apparel industry remains one of the country’s most important US-facing export sectors.
  • AGOA is currently authorised through December 31, 2026, while a further extension through 2028 has advanced in the US Congress but is not yet fully enacted.

Kenya Wants to Turn Dialogue Into Investment

The summit is designed less as a conventional conference and more as a commercial deal-making forum. Its programme includes high-level policy discussions, industry investment sessions and direct business-to-government and business-to-business meetings.

Organisers say the previous four editions generated more than $2 billion in tracked investment commitments while attracting more than 5,000 delegates from over 30 countries.

The 2026 edition will focus on seven areas considered central to East Africa’s growth prospects: agriculture, the digital economy, energy and infrastructure, manufacturing, health, critical minerals and the creative economy.

That focus mirrors Kenya’s wider effort to attract long-term capital into productive sectors. Earlier in 2026, the government announced more than $2.9 billion across 20 investment deals covering sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, ICT and energy.

Manufacturing and Digital Investment Take Centre Stage

Manufacturing is likely to be one of the most important areas for Kenya because the country wants foreign investment that can generate exports, jobs and stronger regional supply chains.

Technology is another central theme. Digital trade, artificial intelligence, infrastructure and cross-border services have become increasingly important components of Kenya-US commercial engagement.

The summit programme includes discussions on East Africa’s digital infrastructure and digital trade alongside sessions covering critical minerals, manufacturing, agriculture and financing for regional growth.

Kenya’s attraction is partly its role as a commercial gateway into East Africa, but competition for capital across the continent means investors are also demanding predictable regulation, reliable infrastructure and clearer pathways for scaling businesses across borders.

AGOA Remains Critical for Kenyan Exporters

Trade policy will provide an important backdrop to the summit, particularly for Kenya’s apparel industry.

In 2024, Kenyan apparel exports to the US reached about Sh60.57 billion, representing a 19% increase from the previous year. The sector employed more than 66,800 people across apparel companies operating under the export-processing programme.

A major advantage has been the third-country fabric provision, which allows eligible manufacturers to use fabrics sourced outside the region while still qualifying for preferential access when finished garments are exported to the US.

However, the timeline requires careful distinction. The AGOA programme currently in force runs through December 31, 2026, following legislation signed in February after the programme temporarily expired in September 2025.

The US Senate subsequently approved legislation that would extend the programme through December 31, 2028, including the apparel and third-country fabric provisions. That longer extension still requires completion of the legislative process before it becomes law.

Summit Could Strengthen Kenya’s Investment Pipeline

For Kenya, the opportunity goes beyond announcing individual transactions. Stronger US commercial engagement could help attract financing, technology and corporate partnerships into sectors where the country is seeking to expand productive capacity.

The summit also gives businesses an opportunity to raise issues around regulation, market access and investment barriers directly with policymakers.

If Kenya can combine preferential export access with better infrastructure, competitive production costs and policy certainty, the country could strengthen its position as both a manufacturing base and a regional headquarters location for international companies.

The September summit will therefore be closely watched not simply for the number of delegates attending, but for whether discussions translate into signed investments, financing commitments and commercial partnerships that move beyond the conference room.
