Kenya Seeks Russian Buyers as Bilateral Trade Gap Narrows

Kenya seeks Russian buyers to expand exports as the bilateral trade gap narrows, highlighting trade relations, export opportunities, and economic cooperation between the two countries

Kenya is seeking a bigger market in Russia for tea, coffee and horticultural produce as Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi attends high-level meetings in Moscow from October 28. The push follows a steep fall in Russian imports in 2025, which narrowed Kenya’s bilateral trade deficit despite only modest growth in exports. Officials also plan to discuss investment in energy, manufacturing and technology as Nairobi searches for additional buyers for agricultural products.

Key Overview

  • Kenya imported KSh33.3 billion worth of Russian goods in 2025, down from KSh79.1 billion in 2024.
  • Exports to Russia edged up to approximately KSh6.7 billion, from KSh6.5 billion.
  • The bilateral trade deficit narrowed to KSh26.6 billion, compared with KSh72.6 billion a year earlier.
  • Kenya is prioritising tea, coffee and horticulture during the October 28–30 Russia–Africa meetings.
  • Investment discussions are expected to cover agriculture, energy, manufacturing, science and technology.

A Smaller Bilateral Deficit, but Limited Export Growth

Kenya’s trade figures for 2025 show a sharp contraction in imports from Russia, which fell by about KSh45.8 billion, or 57.9%, from the previous year. Exports, meanwhile, rose by roughly KSh230 million, leaving Russian sales of goods to Kenya almost five times the value of Kenyan exports in the opposite direction.

The narrower deficit reflects mainly reduced purchases, rather than a major breakthrough in export competitiveness. Fertilisers, wheat and meslin are among the products behind the shifts in import trade, while Kenya continues to seek a more diversified export base.

This bilateral improvement should not be confused with Kenya’s overall merchandise trade position. The 2026 Economic Survey records continuing pressure from the country’s substantial import bill, reinforcing the importance of stronger export earnings across multiple markets.

Tea, Coffee and Horticulture Offer Export Potential

Tea is a leading focus of Kenya’s Moscow trade mission. National tea export volumes reached approximately 653,736 tonnes in 2025, up 4.3%, although the average export unit price declined to about KSh286.10 per kilogram. The combination illustrates why finding additional buyers matters: higher volumes do not necessarily deliver equivalent growth in revenue.

Unroasted coffee exports were approximately 53,376 tonnes, little changed from the preceding year’s volume. Their average unit price, however, increased sharply to about KSh975.30 per kilogram, providing stronger earnings without a comparable rise in shipment quantities.

The agricultural export statistics also show fresh horticultural export volumes rising 13.8% to 457,900 tonnes, with earnings increasing 5.3% to KSh143.8 billion. Cut flowers contributed KSh81.3 billion and fruit exports KSh41.2 billion. Fresh vegetable earnings, by contrast, fell to KSh21.3 billion despite increased volumes, highlighting the importance of market access, quality compliance and prices.

These are Kenya’s worldwide export figures, not sales specifically to Russia. They illustrate the industries Nairobi hopes to promote, but do not establish how much additional demand Russia could absorb.

Moscow Talks Target Markets and Investment

Mudavadi travelled to Russia on October 26 ahead of the Russia–Africa summit programme. Kenya’s delegation is seeking access for agricultural exports alongside partnerships in industrial production, energy and emerging technologies.

The high-level programme is scheduled for October 28–30, with summit sessions and related economic meetings in Moscow. Mudavadi is also expected to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss bilateral relations and potential commercial cooperation.

The trip follows earlier diplomatic engagement around the summit, including preparatory discussions on economic priorities. However, planned talks should not be treated as signed export contracts or investment commitments.

Trade Results Will Matter More Than Diplomatic Announcements

For Kenya, success will depend on whether Russian buyers place larger orders and whether exporters can meet shipment, payment and regulatory requirements on commercially viable terms. New investment would also need to advance from discussions to financed projects.

The immediate trade gap has narrowed, but the small increase in Kenyan exports shows that expanding sales remains the more difficult task. The Moscow meetings offer a chance to test demand for Kenyan agricultural products and build business relationships capable of delivering measurable export earnings.
