Impact Fund Denmark Backs ETG With $22.5m Agri Loan

Share
Impact Fund Denmark provides a $22.5 million agricultural loan to ETG to strengthen agribusiness financing, sustainable agriculture, food security, and supply chain development across Africa
Share

Impact Fund Denmark has committed $22.5 million to African agribusiness group ETG as part of a $600 million syndicated sustainability-linked loan. The financing is designed to strengthen ETG’s working capital while expanding farmers’ access to agricultural inputs, advisory services, logistics and global markets.

The loan also ties ETG’s borrowing costs to measurable environmental and social targets. These include greater support for women farmers, wider farmer advisory coverage, lower carbon emissions and reduced deforestation across the company’s value chains.

Key Overview

  • Impact Fund Denmark is contributing $22.5 million, equivalent to DKK146 million.
  • The wider syndicated loan totals $600 million.
  • Participating institutions include FMO, TDB, Finnfund and CDP.
  • ETG operates in 32 African countries and connects smallholder farmers with global buyers.
  • The interest rate can fall if agreed sustainability targets are achieved.
  • ETG aims to reach one million farmers by 2030.

Financing Links Capital Costs to Sustainability

Under the new financing agreement, ETG can benefit from a lower interest rate if it meets predetermined sustainability targets. The performance measures cover support for women farmers, agricultural advisory services, deforestation and carbon emissions.

This structure differs from a conventional corporate loan because the pricing is partly linked to outcomes beyond ETG’s financial performance. It gives the company a direct financial incentive to improve how it works with farmers and manages the environmental impact of its supply chains.

Impact Fund Denmark is joining European and African development finance institutions, including FMO, TDB, Finnfund and CDP. Its $22.5 million contribution represents 3.75% of the overall $600 million financing package.

ETG’s Role Across African Agricultural Supply Chains

ETG is one of Africa’s largest agribusiness groups and operates in 32 countries across the continent. It buys crops from smallholder farmers, supplies agricultural inputs such as fertiliser and seeds, provides advisory support and connects produce with domestic and international markets.

The company’s model addresses several persistent barriers facing farmers, including limited market access, weak storage and logistics systems, insufficient financing and inconsistent access to quality inputs. By providing working capital to ETG, the lenders aim to support crop purchasing and other activities that keep agricultural value chains functioning.

A project assessment of ETG describes the group as a diversified agricultural conglomerate that links African smallholders to global buyers while managing logistics, processing and supply-chain operations. The assessment also identifies greenhouse-gas reduction, deforestation, reforestation and farmer extension services as key sustainability priorities.

Larger Facility Builds on Earlier ETG Financing

The $600 million package follows a $394 million sustainability-linked facility announced in November 2024. That earlier transaction was arranged by FMO and TDB to finance ETG’s working capital needs across Africa and was described as one of the largest sustainability-linked loans in the continent’s agricultural sector.

The earlier syndicated facility brought together several development finance institutions and impact investors. It also established targets linked to smallholder productivity, crop quality and ETG’s ambition to reach one million African farmers.

Additional financing has reinforced this strategy. The African Development Bank approved $75 million for ETG’s sustainability-linked loan facility, with targets covering decarbonisation, reforestation, zero deforestation, farmer services and gender inclusion.

Why the Investment Matters for Farmers

Agriculture supports millions of livelihoods across Africa, but farmers often lose income because they cannot access reliable buyers, affordable inputs, storage, transport or financing. ETG’s network can help bridge those gaps by connecting producers with services and markets at scale.

The sustainability-linked structure is especially significant because it makes social and environmental performance part of the financing terms. ETG’s ability to secure lower borrowing costs will depend partly on whether it expands support for farmers while improving climate and land-use outcomes.

For Impact Fund Denmark, the investment combines development impact with commercial lending. For ETG, it provides additional capital to fund crop procurement and other working-capital needs while reinforcing its long-term sustainability commitments.
