Ethiopia has launched a $90 million, five-year partnership with the Beginnings Fund to improve maternal and newborn healthcare across 210 facilities in eight regions. Announced in Addis Ababa on October 13, 2026, the new healthcare partnership will support skilled health workers, essential medicines and equipment, and stronger emergency referral systems.

The initiative is part of Ethiopia’s wider efforts to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths. Its backers say the investment will reinforce government health priorities rather than establish a separate, parallel programme.

Key Overview

  • Investment: $90 million over five years to strengthen maternal and newborn care.
  • Coverage: 210 health facilities across eight Ethiopian regions.
  • Government coordination: $10 million of the announced package has been channelled through Ethiopia’s Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (RMNCH) Compact.
  • Health objective: The partnership is intended to contribute to national efforts to avert approximately 86,000 maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths by 2031.
  • Regional reach: Ethiopia is the third country to announce a Beginnings Fund partnership, following Kenya and Malawi.

Where the $90 Million Will Be Invested

The plan focuses on healthcare delivery rather than construction alone. Funding will support the recruitment, training and deployment of skilled maternity and neonatal personnel, while helping facilities access proven, affordable interventions and medical supplies. Investments in infrastructure, clinical data and emergency transport referrals are also intended to reduce delays when mothers and newborns need urgent treatment.

At the official launch in Addis Ababa, Health Minister Mekdes Daba Feyssa said the partnership would help expand access to quality services, including in communities that have not benefited equally from improvements in urban healthcare. Fund chief executive Alice Kang’ethe emphasized working through nationally defined priorities and existing healthcare systems.

Ethiopia’s Maternal Health Challenge

Ethiopia has reduced maternal mortality over the past two decades, but preventable pregnancy and childbirth complications remain a major concern. The latest internationally comparable estimates put the country’s maternal mortality ratio at approximately 195 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023.

A country health assessment published in 2025 estimated that nearly 8,000 Ethiopian women die annually from pregnancy-related complications. It identified gaps in skilled staffing, medical infrastructure and timely care, especially in rural and conflict-affected areas. These conditions explain why improving the quality of treatment at existing facilities is as important as expanding physical access.

Why $10 Million Will Flow Through a Government Compact

Of the overall $90 million investment, $10 million is being directed through the RMNCH Compact, a government-led arrangement that coordinates domestic and donor financing for reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health. This amount is part of the announced $90 million, not an additional commitment.

The financing structure is designed to align external philanthropy with Ethiopia’s healthcare priorities and other partner investments. Coordinated funding may help avoid fragmented projects, although its effectiveness will depend on how resources reach facilities and how improvements are measured.

A Wider African Maternal and Newborn Health Initiative

Launched in 2025, the Beginnings Fund is described as a $525 million philanthropic initiative supporting health systems across 10 African countries. Its broader investment strategy brings together philanthropic donors and governments to strengthen healthcare workers, deploy evidence-based products and improve the systems connecting patients to appropriate care.

The latest announcement says the fund aims to improve care for 34 million mothers and babies and prevent more than 300,000 avoidable deaths across the participating countries by 2031. Ethiopia joins Kenya and Malawi as the third country to announce a partnership. The regional partnership model emphasizes government leadership and sustained improvements in clinical services instead of isolated short-term interventions.

What Success Would Mean by 2031

The stated ambition is for the Ethiopian partnership to contribute to preventing approximately 86,000 maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths as part of the country’s wider health efforts. That number is a future programme objective, not a recorded outcome or a guarantee that the fund alone will prevent every death included in the estimate.

Progress will depend on whether participating facilities gain dependable staff, medicines, equipment and functioning referral networks, as well as whether maternal and newborn health outcomes improve over time. The partnership’s longer-term significance lies in strengthening services that can continue delivering safe pregnancies and births beyond the initial five-year funding period.
