Electric Vehicle Grant Scheme Offers Irish Drivers €8,500

Ireland launches electric vehicle grant scheme offering drivers up to 8500 euro to switch to EVs
Share

Ireland has unveiled a new €8,500 electric vehicle grant scheme aimed at accelerating the country’s transition to cleaner transport. The initiative combines scrappage support with existing EV grants, allowing owners of older petrol and diesel vehicles to receive up to €8,500 when purchasing a new battery electric vehicle. The pilot program, which launches on July 1, is designed to reduce transport emissions, improve air quality, and encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles, particularly in rural communities where car ownership remains essential.

Key Overview

  • Drivers can access up to €8,500 in support
  • €5,000 scrappage payment plus existing €3,500 EV grant
  • Applies to petrol and diesel vehicles registered in 2013 or earlier
  • €10 million pilot fund launches on July 1
  • Around 2,000 vehicle replacements targeted
  • 65% of funding reserved for rural applicants
  • Additional €30 million allocated to existing EV support programs

Ireland Expands Support for Electric Vehicle Adoption

The Irish government has introduced a new scrappage scheme designed to encourage motorists to switch from older petrol and diesel vehicles to cleaner electric alternatives.

Under the new ICE2EV scheme, owners of qualifying vehicles registered in 2013 or earlier can receive a €5,000 scrappage payment when permanently removing their vehicle from the road. The payment must be used toward the purchase of a new battery electric vehicle and can be combined with the existing €3,500 grant available through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

Together, the incentives provide motorists with up to €8,500 in financial support.

The pilot scheme will operate on a first-come, first-served basis until its €10 million allocation is exhausted.

Rural Communities Prioritized

A significant feature of the initiative is its focus on rural Ireland.

The Department of Transport has reserved 65 per cent of available funding for rural applicants, recognizing that many communities outside major urban centers rely heavily on private vehicles due to limited public transport options.

The remaining 35 per cent of funding will be available to residents of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.

Officials believe directing resources toward rural areas will help maximize emissions reductions while ensuring that households most dependent on private transport can benefit from the transition to electric mobility.

Government Increases Funding for EV Programs

The launch comes amid growing demand for electric car grants across Ireland.

According to government estimates, the current EV support program is experiencing a sharp increase in applications as more consumers consider switching to electric vehicles.

To meet this demand, an additional €30 million will be allocated to the existing EV grant scheme through the Climate Action Fund.

At the same time, the government plans to lower the maximum eligible vehicle price under the standard EV grant program from €60,000 to €50,000 from July 31.

The Department of Transport said the adjustment is intended to focus public support on smaller and medium-sized vehicles rather than premium models.

Lowering the Cost of Switching to Electric Vehicles

One of the key objectives of the new program is to address the upfront cost barrier associated with electric vehicle purchases.

While some observers have noted that owners of older vehicles may still face affordability challenges even after receiving grant support, Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien said the enhanced funding package is designed to make switching more achievable for households.

Officials also point to the long-term savings associated with EV ownership.

According to the minister, drivers can save between €1,500 to €2,000 annually through lower fuel and maintenance costs compared with conventional vehicles.

These savings, combined with government-backed EV incentives, are expected to improve the overall affordability of electric vehicle ownership over time.

Supporting Climate and Air Quality Goals

The initiative forms part of Ireland’s broader climate strategy aimed at reducing emissions from the transport sector.

Transport remains one of the country’s largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, making vehicle electrification a key component of national climate policy.

By encouraging motorists to replace older internal combustion engine vehicles with battery electric vehicles, the government hopes to reduce emissions while improving local air quality.

The SEAI will administer the pilot scheme and assess its performance throughout the year.

Officials have indicated that if the program proves successful, a larger nationwide scheme could be introduced in 2027.

Outlook

Ireland’s new electric vehicle grant scheme represents a major step toward accelerating the country’s EV transition. By combining scrappage support with existing electric vehicle incentives, the government is seeking to make electric vehicles more accessible while removing older, higher-emitting cars from the road.

If demand remains strong, the pilot could pave the way for a broader national program, helping Ireland advance its climate goals while supporting cleaner and more affordable transport options for households across the country.

FAQS

1: Who qualifies for Ireland’s €8,500 electric vehicle grant?

Drivers who own a petrol or diesel vehicle registered in 2013 or earlier may qualify for the scheme. Eligible applicants can receive a €5,000 scrappage payment when permanently removing their old vehicle from the road, plus the existing €3,500 EV grant toward the purchase of a new battery electric vehicle.

2: How much funding is available under the new EV scrappage scheme?

The pilot ICE2EV scheme has been allocated €10 million and is expected to support around 2,000 vehicle replacements. Grants will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until the fund is exhausted.

FAQ 3: Why is Ireland prioritizing rural drivers under the scheme?

The government has reserved 65% of the scheme’s funding for rural applicants because many rural communities rely heavily on private vehicles due to limited public transport options. The remaining 35% of funds will be available to applicants in major cities.

4: What are the benefits of switching from an older petrol or diesel car to an EV?

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality, EV owners can save between €1,500 and €2,000 annually through lower fuel and maintenance costs. The new electric vehicle grant aims to make the switch more affordable while supporting Ireland’s climate goals.
