Citigroup and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase are partnering to develop stablecoin payment services for institutional clients. The collaboration aims to connect Citi’s traditional banking and merchant-processing infrastructure with Coinbase’s blockchain-based payment rails. The service is expected to allow institutional customers to accept stablecoin payments, while Citi handles settlement and Coinbase provides the underlying blockchain infrastructure. Specific details on supported stablecoins and the launch timeline have not yet been disclosed.

Key Overview

  • Partners: Citigroup and Coinbase
  • Focus: Institutional stablecoin payments
  • Coinbase’s role: Stablecoin payment rails and blockchain infrastructure
  • Citi’s role: Merchant processing and settlement
  • Target users: Institutional clients and multinational corporations
  • Stablecoin details: Specific tokens have not been disclosed
  • Launch date: Not yet announced
  • Additional Citi expansion: Token services are being expanded to Japan and the United Arab Emirates

Citigroup and Coinbase Join Forces on Stablecoin Payments

Citigroup and Coinbase are working together to develop infrastructure that will allow institutional clients to use stablecoins for payments.

The partnership is designed to connect traditional financial systems with blockchain-based payment infrastructure, providing institutional customers with another way to receive and manage digital payments.

While cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin have not become widely used for everyday payments, stablecoins have increasingly been positioned as a payment technology because they are designed to represent traditional currencies digitally, particularly the US dollar.

The two companies have not disclosed which stablecoins will be supported or when the planned service will officially launch.

Citi Clients Could Accept Stablecoin Payments

Infographic showing how Citi and Coinbase could enable stablecoin payments for institutional clients, from customer payment and merchant processing to blockchain rails, fiat conversion, and final settlement.

Under the planned arrangement, Citi’s institutional clients, including large multinational corporations, will be able to accept stablecoin payments from customers through Citi’s merchant-processing services.

Coinbase will provide the stablecoin payment rails and underlying blockchain technology.

The infrastructure is expected to automatically convert stablecoin payments into government-issued currency, while Citi will act as the bank of record responsible for settling the funds.

This structure would bring blockchain-based payments into an existing banking framework rather than requiring institutional customers to rely entirely on separate cryptocurrency infrastructure.

Coinbase Provides Blockchain Payment Infrastructure

Coinbase will provide the blockchain technology supporting the payment system.

The cryptocurrency exchange has been working to expand the use of digital assets for payments among both individual and institutional customers.

Through the Citi partnership, payments customers will also be able to use Citi’s banking capabilities to accept, hold and make payments through a bank-account-like structure.

Incoming cash can be automatically converted into stablecoins, which are digital tokens designed to maintain a value linked to traditional currencies such as the US dollar.

The stablecoins would be held at Coinbase and, according to the information provided, could earn a reward currently equivalent to an annual rate of 3.75%.

Connecting Traditional Banking With Digital Assets

Shahmir Khaliq, head of services at Citi, said the partnership is intended to connect digital assets with parts of the economy that currently depend on government-issued currencies.

The initiative therefore focuses on integrating stablecoins into existing financial infrastructure rather than treating them solely as cryptocurrency trading instruments.

The partnership reflects growing efforts by financial institutions and digital asset companies to develop payment systems that combine blockchain technology with traditional banking services.

Citi Expands Its Token Services

Separately, Citi is expanding its existing token services, which use the bank’s own blockchain infrastructure to allow multinational companies to move their own funds across Citi’s network.

The service is designed to support transfers instantly and around the clock.

Citi is now expanding the service to Japan and the United Arab Emirates. The programme will consequently be available across seven jurisdictions, including the United States.

The expansion adds another element to Citi’s broader work on blockchain and tokenisation alongside its stablecoin payment collaboration with Coinbase.

Stablecoin Payments Continue to Expand

Stablecoin activity in payments and transfers has increased, according to the information provided.

While the overall stablecoin supply has remained around $320 billion, payment and transfer activity has increased since the beginning of 2026.

Cross-border stablecoin flows have also increased, with Chainalysis estimating a 78% rise over the 12 months ending in June 2026.

Stablecoins are increasingly being considered as a payment infrastructure because they can transfer digital representations of traditional currencies through blockchain networks.

Stablecoins and Traditional Financial Infrastructure

The partnership between Citi and Coinbase illustrates how stablecoins can be integrated with conventional banking systems.

Instead of requiring institutional customers to completely replace existing payment infrastructure, the proposed model combines Coinbase’s blockchain rails with Citi’s banking and settlement capabilities.

This could allow companies to interact with stablecoin payments while continuing to use established banking relationships for settlement and management of funds.

The arrangement also highlights the growing intersection between banks, cryptocurrency exchanges and blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

Outlook

The Citigroup-Coinbase partnership could expand the use of stablecoins among institutional customers by combining blockchain payment infrastructure with traditional banking and merchant-processing services.

Coinbase is expected to provide the digital payment rails, while Citi will provide banking and settlement capabilities. However, the companies have not yet disclosed the specific stablecoins that will be supported or when the service will launch.

Citi’s simultaneous expansion of its token services into Japan and the United Arab Emirates also highlights the bank’s continued development of blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
