African Union Granted Permanent Membership in G20 Group

In a momentous diplomatic move, the African Union (AU) has secured permanent membership in the Group of Twenty (G20) during the G20 leaders’ summit, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This landmark decision reflects India’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and amplifying the voices of nations from the Global South.

Africa’s presence within the G20 has been limited until now, primarily represented through South Africa’s seat and the AU’s status as a permanent guest. However, this shift marks the first significant change in the G20 since its establishment in 1999.

Prime Minister Modi, who is using this opportunity to bolster his international statesmanship ahead of national elections, welcomed AU Chairman and Comoros President Azali Assoumani warmly. He initiated the proposal to grant permanent G20 membership to the African Union, which received unanimous approval from all G20 members.

Modi stated, “India’s G-20 presidency symbolizes inclusion, both within our nation and globally, reflecting the spirit of ‘Sabka Saath’ or togetherness.” With this spirit in mind, he invited the African Union to take its rightful place as a permanent G20 member, symbolically sealing the deal with a ceremonial gavel.

Assoumani, representing the AU, joined the conference table as a full-fledged G20 member, signifying Africa’s enhanced role in global economic discussions.

The AU, comprised of 55 African nations representing approximately 1.4 billion people and contributing around 10% of the global economy, was officially launched in 2002. This move emphasizes India’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and amplifying the voices of nations from the Global South during its G20 presidency.

The African Union’s permanent membership in the G20 is a pivotal moment in global diplomacy. It underscores India’s role in shaping the G20’s future agenda, with a focus on representing the interests of the Global South.

Leaders worldwide have expressed support for this historic development, with European Council President Charles Michel praising the decision and reaffirming the EU’s steadfast support for this initiative.

As the G20 leaders’ summit continues, the world watches as the African Union takes its place among the world’s wealthiest and most influential nations, contributing its unique perspectives and priorities to global economic discussions.
