Kenya has launched a $160 million (approximately KES 20.8 billion) conservation financing initiative aimed at protecting wildlife habitats, improving climate resilience and creating economic opportunities for communities living alongside nature. Announced on October 21, 2026, the Thamani Asili programme will support conservation across approximately 17.3 million hectares over the next decade.
At the official programme launch, the government, The Nature Conservancy and Enduring Earth outlined a financing model designed to replace short-term conservation grants with longer-term commitments. The initiative is expected to directly benefit around 1.6 million people, with another 3.9 million potentially benefiting indirectly.
Key Overview
- Total planned financing: $160 million over ten years, comprising $80 million in expected philanthropic support and $80 million from Kenya’s government.
- Conservation reach: Approximately 17.3 million hectares across priority landscapes.
- Community benefits: Around 1.6 million direct beneficiaries and a further 3.9 million potential indirect beneficiaries.
- Employment targets: An estimated 7,800 direct and 15,000 indirect jobs through nature-related activities.
- Climate target: Approximately 7.5 million tonnes of avoided carbon emissions by 2035.
- Priority areas: Tsavo to Coastal, Greater Ewaso, Greater Rift to Western, and Southern Kenya.
How the $160 Million Conservation Fund Will Work
Thamani Asili, meaning value of nature in Kiswahili, uses a Project Finance for Permanence model. This approach brings government commitments, donor funding and agreed conservation measures into a long-term programme rather than relying on successive short-term projects.
Under the ten-year funding arrangement, philanthropic partners are expected to mobilise $80 million, matched by a further $80 million from the Kenyan government. These are planned contributions over time, not evidence that the full $160 million has already been disbursed.
A newly established independent conservation trust, the Thamani Asili Fund for Kenya, will manage and distribute donor resources and track progress. Continued financing and delivery will depend on implementation, accountability and cooperation between public agencies and local communities.
Conservation Targets Cover 17.3 Million Hectares
The initiative aims to support conservation across 17.3 million hectares, encompassing new protected or conserved areas, existing landscapes requiring stronger management and community-managed natural resources.
Its land-management commitments include establishing approximately 2.7 million hectares of conserved areas, improving management across more than 11 million hectares of existing conservation areas, and enabling stronger community stewardship over another 6 million hectares. These figures describe different interventions and should not be summed as if they were entirely separate from the overall programme footprint.
Initial activities will focus on four landscapes: Tsavo to Coastal, Greater Ewaso, Greater Rift to Western, and Southern Kenya. These areas are important for wildlife movement, water catchments, agriculture and tourism, linking biodiversity protection with economic livelihoods.

Jobs and Livelihoods Take Centre Stage
The programme is expected to create approximately 7,800 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs, with nature-related businesses potentially benefiting up to 80,000 people. Opportunities identified include ecotourism, sustainable livestock grazing, carbon-related projects and other enterprises connected to healthy ecosystems.
Community participation is central to the plan. Stronger land governance and local decision-making could help residents benefit from conservation while reducing conflicts involving livestock, crops and wildlife. The reported community-development commitments also emphasise livestock protection and practical land-use planning.
These employment and beneficiary figures are projections, not jobs already created or income already received. Delivering them will require effective local institutions, fair benefit-sharing and viable businesses.
Climate Resilience and Kenya’s 2030 Conservation Goals
Thamani Asili aims to help avoid approximately 7.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions by 2035, alongside protecting ecosystems that support water supplies and communities’ resilience to climate shocks. That is a future avoidance estimate, not a verified reduction already achieved.
The programme also supports Kenya’s efforts towards the global 30-by-30 biodiversity target, which calls for effective conservation of at least 30% of terrestrial and inland water areas and of coastal and marine areas by 2030, with attention to equitable governance and community rights.
What Will Determine the Programme’s Success?
The initiative provides a framework for linking conservation finance with lasting economic benefits. Its success will depend on whether funding arrives as scheduled, community groups have meaningful decision-making power, and conservation gains can be measured independently.
For Kenya, the opportunity extends beyond protecting wildlife: stronger ecosystems can support tourism, agriculture and water security. The real test will be whether the $160 million commitment produces durable environmental improvements and reliable livelihoods over the next decade.
