USAid has launched the ‘Safe Milk Kenya’ project in partnership with BioFood Products Limited, aiming to improve the quality and safety of Kenya’s dairy products. This initiative is part of USAid’s broader efforts to strengthen agricultural practices and promote economic growth in the region.

Robert Kilonzo, USAid’s project management specialist for Kenya and East Africa, highlighted the project’s strategic focus during an interview with the Star. He emphasized the collaborative approach involving the private sector, Kenya Dairy Board, and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to ensure safe and high-quality milk production.

The initiative addresses critical challenges such as mycotoxin contamination, particularly aflatoxin, which poses risks to both public health and dairy industry sustainability. By partnering with BioFood Products Limited and local authorities, USAid aims to empower farmers with training and resources to adopt sustainable farming practices.

Projected to run until 2026 under the African Trade and Investments programme, the Safe Milk Initiative aims to boost job creation, increase farmer incomes, and enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in global dairy markets. Kilonzo expressed confidence in achieving these goals through systematic capacity-building and technical support for dairy farmers.

Looking ahead, USAid plans to expand the initiative’s impact by integrating advanced technologies and broadening partnerships across the dairy value chain. This strategic approach underscores USAid’s commitment to long-term agricultural sustainability and economic development in Kenya.
