Starlink Enters Kenya

Share
Share

July 18, 2023

Starlink, the groundbreaking satellite internet service, has made its entry into the Kenyan market. This move follows its successful expansion into other African countries, including Nigeria, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone, as announced by CEO Elon Musk earlier this year. On July 18, 2023, Musk took to Twitter to announce the inclusion of Kenya as Starlink’s latest market.

What is Starlink?

Starlink operates the world’s first and largest satellite constellation, utilizing a low Earth orbit to provide high-speed broadband internet. With advanced satellites and user hardware, coupled with extensive expertise in spacecraft and on-orbit operations, Starlink enables users worldwide to access low-latency internet connections suitable for streaming, online gaming, video calls, and more.

Impact on the Kenyan Market

In response to Starlink’s imminent entry into Kenya, Safaricom, a leading telecom operator, has revealed plans to introduce satellite internet services in the country. While 5G technology has been widely discussed for its potential to transform connectivity, satellite internet connections pose an even greater disruption to the status quo.

Safaricom has confirmed its partnership with AST SpaceMobile, a rival of Starlink, to offer satellite internet services. AST SpaceMobile, a Texas-based company, is developing a network that utilizes satellites to provide internet access in areas with limited coverage. Notably, this space-based broadband network will be accessible using standard mobile phones. This groundbreaking capability positions AST SpaceMobile as the first company to offer such a service.

As various technologies, including 5G, fiber, and satellite internet, compete for dominance in the market, we can expect improved affordability of internet services across Kenya. However, realizing this positive outcome depends on the government fostering a competitive environment and enabling seamless expansion for multiple providers.

Accessing Starlink in Kenya

Karibu Connect, a proud authorized reseller of Starlink, has achieved a significant milestone in its mission to bridge the digital divide and enhance connectivity infrastructure throughout the country. While resellers may have their own pricing strategies, the specific charges and offerings of Karibu Connect are yet to be disclosed.

John Thuo, CEO of Karibu Connect, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing its importance for Kenya’s technological advancement. Thuo stated, “Our partnership with Starlink is a significant step forward in delivering affordable, high-quality internet access to all corners of Kenya. Starlink’s groundbreaking technology will revolutionize how rural Kenya engages with the global community, fostering societal progress and driving economic growth.”

Cost of Starlink in Kenya

To access Starlink in Kenya, users will need the necessary equipment, including a satellite dish, which is estimated to cost around 89,000 Kenyan shillings, excluding shipping expenses, according to the official Starlink website. The monthly subscription is expected to range between 7,000 and 13,000 Kenyan shillings.
