Samsung Electronics and five other Samsung affiliates are investing a combined $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure, a KKR-backed company created to finance and develop large-scale AI infrastructure.

The deal marks a significant expansion of Samsung’s role in the AI economy. Rather than participating only as a supplier of memory chips, batteries, cooling equipment and IT services, the group is positioning itself closer to the financing, construction and operation of the data centres and power systems that underpin artificial intelligence.

Key Overview

  • Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance will invest a combined $1 billion in Helix.
  • Samsung Electronics will contribute $500 million, with the other five affiliates providing the remaining amount.
  • Helix launched in June 2026 with more than $10 billion in committed capital.
  • KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia and Vistra are founding investors in the platform.
  • Helix focuses on data centres, power generation, transmission, distribution and connectivity infrastructure.
  • Samsung’s investment gives the group exposure across semiconductors, cooling, batteries, construction and cloud infrastructure.

Samsung Expands Beyond Chips Into AI Infrastructure

The six Samsung affiliates have agreed to invest a combined $1 billion in Helix, with Samsung Electronics contributing half of the total.

The investment is notable because it broadens Samsung’s exposure beyond the semiconductor layer of artificial intelligence. AI data centres require far more than processors: they need reliable power generation, transmission infrastructure, cooling systems, backup batteries, fibre connectivity and large-scale engineering expertise.

Samsung already operates across many of those areas. Its semiconductor business supplies memory and other components for computing systems, while Samsung C&T has experience in large infrastructure and engineering projects. Samsung SDS develops and operates data centres, and Samsung SDI produces battery systems that can support uninterrupted power requirements.

The group therefore enters Helix not simply as a financial investor, but as a potential strategic partner across several parts of the AI infrastructure chain.

Helix Targets the Full AI Data-Centre Stack

Helix was launched in June 2026 with more than $10 billion in committed capital to help hyperscale technology companies build AI infrastructure more quickly.

The company is led by former Amazon Web Services chief executive Adam Selipsky and is designed to coordinate the increasingly complex mix of assets required for modern AI computing.

Its investment mandate includes hyperscale data centres, power generation, transmission and distribution systems, fibre networks and other connectivity infrastructure. Nvidia is a strategic technology partner, while Vistra serves as Helix’s preferred power partner.

Samsung’s additional commitment takes Helix’s capital base to more than $11 billion, strengthening its ability to pursue large-scale projects as spending on AI infrastructure accelerates.

Power and Cooling Are Becoming Strategic Bottlenecks

One of the biggest constraints facing the AI data-centre sector is no longer simply access to advanced chips. Developers must also secure enough electricity and cooling capacity to operate dense clusters of high-performance processors.

Helix has been structured around that challenge, combining data-centre development with energy infrastructure rather than treating the two as separate investments.

Samsung has also been strengthening its cooling capabilities. In 2025, the company completed its acquisition of FläktGroup, a major commercial heating, ventilation and air-conditioning specialist with expertise in data-centre cooling.

The group has since continued expanding that business, including plans for additional production capacity focused on cooling systems for AI data centres.

That gives Samsung an increasingly broad portfolio spanning chips, cooling equipment, batteries, engineering and digital infrastructure — all areas that are becoming critical as data-centre power densities rise.

Samsung Seeks a Larger Role in the AI Ecosystem

The Helix investment also signals how technology companies are repositioning themselves as AI infrastructure spending becomes a long-term capital cycle rather than a short-term hardware boom.

Data centres are increasingly becoming platforms for GPU-as-a-Service, sovereign AI, cloud computing and colocation services. That means the economic opportunity extends far beyond selling processors.

By joining KKR, Nvidia, the Kuwait Investment Authority and Vistra in Helix, Samsung gains a position inside a platform that brings together capital, computing technology, power and infrastructure development.

For Samsung, the strategic opportunity is to combine capabilities that were previously spread across separate subsidiaries and use them to participate in entire AI infrastructure projects.

If that model expands, the group could move further from being primarily a supplier of individual components toward becoming a broader participant in the design and delivery of the systems that power the global AI economy.
