In a groundbreaking move set to redefine the copper export landscape, Ivanhoe Mines has announced a momentous memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Kamoa Copper S.A. and Lobito Atlantic International SARL. This heralds the commencement of exporting Kamoa-Kakula’s copper concentrate through the Lobito Atlantic Rail Corridor, marking a significant milestone in both export logistics and regional development.

With up to 10,000 tonnes of copper concentrate poised to be transported via the Angola Lobito Ocean Port in Q4 2023, this MOU signifies the first commercial agreement born from the new concession. Aiding this groundbreaking endeavor is the Lobito Corridor, a rail line stretching 1,739 kilometers from Lobito in Angola to Kolwezi in the DRC. This corridor not only strategically aligns with Ivanhoe’s Western Foreland exploration licenses but also offers an economic and ecological alternative to traditional export routes.

The significance of this initiative lies in its potential to revolutionize trade dynamics within the DRC and beyond. The Lobito Corridor presents a shorter and more direct route for copper exports, reducing transit times and costs significantly compared to existing methods. This streamlined logistics chain will not only bolster economic growth but also align with global sustainability objectives, as rail transport emits far fewer carbon emissions than traditional road routes.

“The Lobito Corridor is set to become a crucial trade route for copper and other critical minerals from a uniquely strategic region of Africa… metals that are so desperately needed for our planet’s energy transition,” stated Robert Friedland, Founder and Executive Co-Chairman of Ivanhoe Mines. He emphasized that such modern infrastructure aligns with Kamoa-Kakula’s commitment to ultra-green copper production.

With the Lobito Corridor poised to transform trade landscapes and accelerate regional industrialization, the recent ceremony marking the 30-year concession’s award is nothing short of historic. Attended by the Presidents of the DRC, Angola, and Zambia, it underscores the regional collaboration and commitment to forging new paths in the extractive industry.

As Ivanhoe Mines unlocks this innovative copper export route, the potential ramifications are far-reaching. This convergence of economic, environmental, and social development marks a pivotal moment in the modern mining landscape, cementing Ivanhoe Mines’ role as a trailblazer for innovative resource extraction.
