Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi has announced an upcoming increase in South Africa’s National Minimum Wage (NMW), effective March 1, 2024. The hourly wage will rise from R25.42 to R27.58, benefiting workers across various sectors.
The adjustment extends to vulnerable sectors such as farm workers and domestic workers, in alignment with efforts to ensure fair compensation practices. Workers in expanded public works programs will also see an increase, from R13.97 to R15.16 per hour.
Furthermore, allowances for workers under learnership agreements, as outlined by the Skills Development Act of 1998, will be adjusted according to the latest government schedule. The Department of Employment and Labour pledges transparency, promising to publish schedules for learnerships and sectoral determinations for Contract Cleaning, Wholesale, and Retail sector employees on its website.
While the NMW Act covers most workers and employers, exemptions apply to certain agencies’ members and unpaid volunteers. It’s important to note that the NMW represents the baseline compensation threshold mandated by law, excluding various allowances and payments.
This NMW increase signifies progress towards equitable wages and economic inclusivity in South Africa. Stay informed as the nation continues its journey toward prosperity and social welfare.
