Olam Agri Commits Over $4 Million to Sustainable Social Investment in Nigeria

Olam Agri, a leading agribusiness company, is significantly expanding its Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CR&S) investment strategy to deepen its social, environmental, and economic development impact within Nigeria. The company has committed to a four-year development plan, allocating approximately N6.5 billion (over $4 million) to various CR&S initiatives aimed at driving socioeconomic growth within the communities where it operates.

These initiatives are part of the award-winning Seeds for the Future (SFTF) programme – Olam Agri’s flagship sustainability effort in Nigeria, designed to foster a brighter future for all. The initiative focuses on five key areas: supporting farmers and farming communities, enhancing education and skill development for young people, empowering economically disadvantaged women, promoting health and nutrition, and reducing carbon emissions across its operations.

Strategic Investment in Sustainability

The expanded investment commitment will support Olam Agri’s sustainable development goals across its diverse business portfolio, which includes rice, wheat milling and pasta, animal feed and protein, sesame, cotton, and edible oils. The company’s efforts will span from 2024 through 2028, ensuring long-term impact and continuity in the communities it serves.

In 2024 alone, Olam Agri plans to invest about $1.07 million into various initiatives, with a focus on education, agricultural development, and empowerment. This investment has already yielded tangible results, such as the presentation of education grants to 15 qualified students from the University of Lagos in January, the awarding of scholarships to 87 underprivileged students in Nasarawa State in June, the provision of manual harvesters for wheat farmers in Jigawa, and the empowerment of 118 agri-extension workers in Kwara State in July.

Education and Skill Development

Education remains a cornerstone of Olam Agri’s CR&S initiatives. The company recognizes that a well-educated populace is crucial for sustainable development. The scholarships and grants provided to students in Lagos and Nasarawa are part of a broader strategy to enhance access to quality education for underprivileged communities. By investing in the education of the youth, Olam Agri is not only empowering the next generation but also laying the groundwork for a more skilled and innovative workforce.

In addition to scholarships, Olam Agri is also focusing on skill development. The company’s initiatives include vocational training programs that equip young people with the skills needed to thrive in the agricultural sector. These programs are designed to address the skills gap in Nigeria’s labor market and to promote entrepreneurship among the youth.

Supporting Farmers and Rural Communities

Olam Agri’s commitment to supporting farmers and rural communities is evident in its comprehensive approach to agricultural development. The company’s initiatives aim to strengthen food security, improve agricultural productivity, and enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

One of the key aspects of this strategy is capacity building for smallholder farmers in rural communities. Olam Agri provides training and resources to help farmers adopt modern agricultural practices, improve crop yields, and reduce post-harvest losses. The distribution of harvesters in Jigawa is a prime example of how the company is helping farmers increase their efficiency and profitability.

Furthermore, Olam Agri is actively involved in rural road rehabilitation projects. These initiatives are crucial for reducing disruptions in the agricultural value chain, ensuring that farmers can transport their produce to markets with ease. By improving infrastructure in rural areas, Olam Agri is not only enhancing the agricultural sector but also contributing to the overall development of these communities.

Promoting Health and Nutrition

In line with its commitment to promoting health and nutrition, Olam Agri is implementing various programs to improve the well-being of the communities it serves. The company’s initiatives focus on increasing access to nutritious food, raising awareness about healthy eating habits, and supporting healthcare services in underserved areas.

Olam Agri’s efforts in promoting nutrition are particularly important given the current food inflation and market challenges in Nigeria. By supporting local food production and improving access to healthy food, the company is helping to mitigate the impact of rising food prices on vulnerable populations.

Economic Empowerment of Women

Olam Agri’s CR&S strategy also places a strong emphasis on the economic empowerment of women. The company recognizes that women play a vital role in the agricultural sector and in the broader economy. Through its initiatives, Olam Agri is providing women with the resources and support they need to achieve financial independence and contribute to the economic development of their communities.

The company’s programs for women include access to microfinance, entrepreneurship training, and support for women-owned businesses. These initiatives are designed to help women overcome the barriers they face in accessing financial services and to promote gender equality in the workplace.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Olam Agri is taking proactive steps to reduce its carbon footprint. The company is implementing measures to minimize carbon emissions across its operations, from production to distribution. This includes investing in renewable energy sources, adopting energy-efficient technologies, and promoting sustainable farming practices.

Olam Agri’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions are in line with global climate goals and Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. By leading the way in sustainable agriculture, Olam Agri is setting an example for other companies in the industry to follow.

Engaging with Government and Stakeholders

Demonstrating Olam Agri’s commitment to sustainable socioeconomic interventions, a high-level delegation led by the Managing Director of Olam Agri in Nigeria paid a courtesy call to the Lagos State Executive Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, August 1, 2024. During the visit, the Managing Director sought partnerships with the State Government to deepen investments for expanded food production and job creation, given the state’s strategic economic importance.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Olam Agri for driving productivity in the agricultural value chain and stressed the need for continued efforts. He stated, “Olam Agri has positioned itself as a prominent leader in Nigeria’s agricultural industry. This meeting provided a great platform to exchange insights and discuss ways to strengthen our contributions to this crucial sector.”

He further emphasized, “Agro and food processing is a critical industry because food security is as vital as medical security or sovereign security in times of conflict. There is no greater security today than food security.”

Collaborations and Public-Private Partnerships

Olam Agri’s approach to sustainable development includes active collaboration with various stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and local communities. The company participates in public-private partnerships (PPPs) aimed at enhancing research and development (R&D) in seed production, improving agricultural practices, and promoting sustainable food systems.

These collaborations are vital for addressing the complex challenges facing Nigeria’s agricultural sector. By working together with other stakeholders, Olam Agri is able to leverage additional resources, share knowledge, and scale up its impact.

Addressing Market Challenges

The Nigerian agricultural sector is currently facing several challenges, including food inflation, supply chain disruptions, and market volatility. Olam Agri’s comprehensive CR&S strategy is designed to address these challenges by promoting local food production, improving market access for farmers, and stabilizing food prices.

The company’s initiatives also focus on enhancing the resilience of the agricultural sector to external shocks, such as climate change and global market fluctuations. By investing in sustainable agriculture and supporting local farmers, Olam Agri is contributing to the long-term stability of Nigeria’s food system.

Olam Agri’s Commitment to Nigeria’s Future

As a business founded in Nigeria over 34 years ago, Olam Agri remains deeply committed to the country’s development. The company’s four-year CR&S investment plan reflects its dedication to creating positive change and making a lasting impact on the lives of millions of Nigerians.

Anil Nair, Managing Director of Olam Agri in Nigeria, commented on the investment, stating, “We are committed to investing in initiatives that positively transform lives and impact the livelihoods of our host communities while scaling food production in the country.”

He added, “We are dedicated to turning our priorities into action by implementing key sustainability initiatives across our value chain to advance the current administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Our four-year implementation plan aims to make a real impact that benefits all.”

Conclusion

Olam Agri’s expanded commitment to sustainable social investment in Nigeria underscores the company’s role as a leader in the agricultural sector and a key driver of socioeconomic development. Through its comprehensive CR&S strategy, Olam Agri is addressing the most pressing challenges facing Nigeria today, from food security to economic empowerment and environmental sustainability. As the company continues to implement its four-year plan, the positive impact on Nigeria’s communities, economy, and environment is expected to grow, further solidifying Olam Agri’s legacy as a catalyst for change in the country.
