NAIROBI, Kenya – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi embarked on his historic Africa tour with Kenya as the first stop, aiming to bolster trade ties and deepen cooperation between the two nations. Following a meeting with Kenyan counterpart William Ruto, the leaders announced the revitalization of diplomatic bonds by signing a series of new agreements.
During a joint media briefing, broadcasted nationwide, President Raisi highlighted the vast potential of the African continent, referring to it as “a continent of capacity and opportunity.” He expressed Iran’s eagerness to engage with Kenya’s capabilities, contributing to the enhancement of bilateral relations. The two presidents oversaw the signing of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements encompassing various sectors such as agriculture, livestock, culture and heritage, information and communication technology (ICT), fisheries, housing, and urban development.
The signed agreements are expected to deepen the existing bilateral relations and pave the way for sustainable growth and development between Kenya and Iran. President Ruto emphasized that these measures would help achieve a trade balance that favors Iran while fostering mutual benefits. The discussions held at State House, Nairobi, also focused on collaboration in key areas.
Of particular importance was the formulation of a strategic framework aimed at facilitating increased exports of essential Kenyan products, including tea, coffee, and meat to Iran. Ruto highlighted Kenya’s dedication to expanding trade volumes and working closely with Tehran to unlock new opportunities, positioning Iran as a gateway to Central Asian countries. This move is set to boost Kenya’s economy and open doors for local farmers and producers.
Moreover, Kenya seeks to leverage Iran’s technological expertise and innovation to further its own development. In line with this vision, the establishment of the Iran House of Innovation and Technology in Nairobi was announced, reinforcing Kenya’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for foreign businesses.
President Raisi’s visit marks a significant milestone as the first official visit by an Iranian president to Africa in over a decade. Kenyan President Ruto extended the invitation, underlining the importance of strengthening ties between the two nations. President Raisi was accorded a warm welcome upon his arrival, including a guard of honor.
Following his visit to Kenya, President Raisi will proceed to Uganda on Thursday and conclude his tour with a visit to Zimbabwe later in the week. The Africa tour symbolizes Iran’s dedication to expanding partnerships globally amidst substantial economic sanctions imposed by the United States.
As these initiatives take shape, Kenya and Iran are poised to unlock new opportunities, foster economic growth, and deepen their bilateral cooperation in various fields, bringing mutual benefits to both nations and solidifying their position on the global stage.
